Abstract

In June, 2005, Governor Bill Richardson signed Executive Order 05-033 on “Climate change and greenhouse gas reduction.” That E.O. called for the State Engineer, in collaboration with other local, state and federal agencies and the State’s research institutions, to “prepare an analysis of the impact of climate change on the State’s water supply and ability to manage its water resources.” This presentation will provide an overview of that report, including: anticipated impacts on New Mexico’s water resources based on existing models and available data; a brief survey of the sectors that will be impacted by climate change; and general strategies to decrease vulnerability and increase adaptation capacity for optimum water management under changing climatic conditions.
