Abstract
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS PROSPECTUS OFMarleina Robson, for the Master of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis and Therapy, presented on May 2023, at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale.TITLE: EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE ON STEREOTYPY AND ACCURACY OF PERFORMANCE DURING ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER: A SYSTEMATIC REPLICATION OF NEELY ET AL. (2015)MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Paige Boydston Antecedent-based physical activity has been shown to increase academic engagement and on-task behavior for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; Harbin et al., 2021) but research is limited on accuracy of performance in addition to academic engagement. The present study's purpose was to expand past research on physical activity and academic engagement in children with ASD by adding the variable of accuracy of performance during engagement following varied amounts of physical activity. Three children with ASD were recruited from an agency that provided behavior-analytic services. The children participated for approximately four weeks, with two to three sessions per day for three to five days per week. Duration of physical activity (jumping on a trampoline) included 0, 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10 minutes, presented in an alternating treatment fashion. The dependent variables in this study were academic engagement and accuracy of performance. The study's results did not show that physical exercise consistently affected academic engagement, challenging behavior, or performance accuracy.
