"Have You Written a Ford, Lately?": Gender, Genre, and the Film Adaptations of Dorothy Johnson's Western Literature

Abstract

This essay studies the role Dorothy Johnson, a mid-century female author of American Western stories, had on the development of the film Western, particularly given that she wrote the story on which John Ford's canonical The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962) was based.
