Abstract

This thesis project represents the culmination of my interests in Afrofuturism, photography, sound art, experimental films, and African American culture. The exhibition Hattak Ohoyo Lusa Achukkowa: African/Native American Woman’s Passage features photomontage works from media cuttings, quotes, African beads and rocks, and family images. The exhibition also features an experimental film that express my personal experiences and journey as an African/Native American woman going though a passage of self discovery and finding her identity though her African American and Native American ancestors. This paper examines the personal, historical, social factors that have inspired this media arts thesis project, and how I used my art as a healing tool.
