Abstract
The spectral decomposition of the space L^2(G) as a direct sum or direct integral is discussed in four cases: the compact abelian circle group, the noncompact abelian real line, a nonabelian compact finite group, and the noncompact, nonabelian group of 2 by 2 matrices with real entries and determinant one.
