The annual reports of the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University contain the minutes of board and board committee meetings for a given fiscal year. They provide information on budget and finance, capital improvements, tuition and fees, university policies, faculty and staff matters, legislation, collective bargaining, academics, and other administrative topics pertaining to the Carbondale, Edwardsville, and School of Medicine (Springfield) campuses.
The nature of the reports has changed over the years. The board’s first report in the current format was published for the 1949-1950 fiscal year. From 1917-1936, the president of Southern Illinois State Normal University presented his report to the Normal School Board along with the presidents of Illinois’ other teachers colleges (normal schools). From 1936-1949, the SINU president submitted the report to the State Teachers College Board. Both the Normal School Board and the State Teachers College Board convened multiple times in a fiscal year, and when compiled, these board proceedings serve as Southern Illinois University’s annual report. Although shorter, they discuss similar topics found in the modern reports.
From the 1870s to 1912, the Southern Illinois Normal University Board of Trustees submitted a biennial report to the Illinois governor. At the same time, the university published an annual “Report of the Principal” and later a “Report of the Principal and Faculty.” These contain reports of the university president and faculty to the university Board of Trustees. The University Archives possesses only board proceedings for years 1914-1916 as opposed to an official bound volume compiling a given year’s meetings.
The annual reports provide a rich history of the growth of Southern Illinois University’s academics and physical plant.
