Abstract
Purpose: This article aims to review the treatment of patients diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis requiring a total knee arthroplasty and examine if the use of robotic- assisted surgery compared to traditional manual surgery results in improved functional outcomes and fewer post-operative complications.
Method: A PubMed literature search was conducted using the search terms total knee arthroplasty, robot surgical procedures, knee osteoarthritis, and quality of life. Nine articles were retrieved and served as the basis for this clinical review.
Results: While RA-TKA holds promise, more comprehensive comparative research is still required to assess the efficacy of RA-TKA in comparison to the conventional manual TKA.
Conclusion: RA-TKA has emerged as a compelling avenue to enhance patient satisfaction. This innovative approach offers surgeons a precise tool for executing bone cuts based on preoperative planning and supplies real-time intraoperative feedback, which is crucial for achieving optimal knee kinematics and soft tissue balance. Although conventional TKA has been effective in treating primary knee osteoarthritis, a growing body of evidence suggests that RA-TKA holds the potential to elevate postoperative function and reduce complication rates even further. RA-TKA is poised to deliver many benefits, including heightened precision, improved alignment, and a diminished likelihood of human error. Given these developments, RA-TKA presents a promising opportunity to augment the outcomes and patient experience associated with knee replacement surgery. Further follow-up studies are warranted to elucidate its long- term outcomes and validate the observed benefits of RA-TKA.
