ABSTRACT
Purpose: The purpose of this article is to review the intervention of an intermittent fasting diet in postmenopausal women with a BMI greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2 in comparison with a nonintervention diet for lowering BMI.
Method: A literature search was performed utilizing PubMed. Keywords such as intermittent fasting, fasting, obesity, weight loss, time-restricted feeding, postmenopausal, and menopause were used in the search. The search was limited to free full articles with dates of 2019-2024. A few combinations of terms were used to focus the results of the search. Articles examining exercise plus intermittent fasting as an intervention were excluded, as well as articles looking at changes in hormones or bone density as a result of intermittent fasting. Seven articles were chosen as relevant for discussion.
Results: Intermittent fasting benefits many disease states, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, improving cardiovascular risk factors.1 Postmenopausal women are especially at risk for obesity and its complications due to hormonal changes that occur in menopause.2 Intermittent fasting appears to have many other health benefits; however, those studies were short and had low participant numbers.
Conclusion: Although benefits were seen, larger, long-term studies are needed to prove the efficacy of intermittent fasting as a diet intervention for postmenopausal women as a long-term lifestyle approach to better health.
