Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to review an uncommon cause of dyspnea: unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis.
Method: A 57-year-old male presented to the clinic with exertional dyspnea. Thorough history and physical exam were performed to evaluate the patient, leading to referrals to different specialists for further evaluation. Evaluations from gastroenterology, cardiology, pulmonology, and cardiothoracic surgery specialists allowed for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Emphasis was placed on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis.
Results: The unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis was treated with left thoracotomy and hemi-diaphragm plication, resulting in resolution of symptoms.
Conclusion: Unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis is an uncommon condition requiring thorough history, physical exam, and diagnostic tests to accurately diagnose this condition.
