Economic Growth Strategies: Has the Effect of Development Strategy upon Growth Changed over time?

Structural strategies have been adopted by many developing countries to reduce the income/technology gap between them and advanced countries. Results have been mixed, however; most countries have failed, but a few have succeeded, newly industrialized economies (NIEs) in particular. Lin (2003) divides the structural strategies into two types: the Comparative-Advantage-Defying (CAD) strategy followed by many developing countries and the Comparative-Advantage-Following (CAF) strategy followed by NIEs. He argues that following the CAD strategy has a fixed negative effect on an economy’s growth over time. This paper however, which allows for the decadal changes in economic conditions and uses the OLS method on a sample of 105 countries and permanent observations of 49 countries, finds that structural strategies’ effects vary over time. Such a finding tempers conclusions from Lin (2003) as less evidence is found that CAD strategies lower growth

This paper contains a study of four piano works, which were performed on my graduate recital. Achille-Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed Images I for piano in 1905, consisting of three movements: “Reflects dans l’eau, Hommage á Rameau,” and “Movement.” Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed his Piano Sonata in A-flat Major, Opus 110 in 1822, during his late period. The three movements of this sonata are atypical of the Classical period, and show Romantic period musical ideas. Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote his Fantasiestücke in eight movements, which musically portray the two sides of his personality, which he nicknamed Florestan and Eusebius. The programmatic movements are titled: “Des Abends, Aufschwung, Warum, Grillen, In der Nacht, Fabel, Traumes Wirren,” and “Ende von Leid.” Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin (1872-1915) wrote his Etudes Opus 8 between 1894 and 1895, from which his Etude No. 12 is among the most famous.

Illinois Local Food Systems: A Geospatial Analysis

Recently, more attention has been paid to studies of local food systems that are specific to a particular place as a potential solution for providing healthy food, reducing carbon emissions, and promotion of local agriculture sustainability. In the United States, the demands of locally produced foods have increased substantially in recent years. There are several reasons for this increase, including long-distance food transportation’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, the community food-security movement, and the increase of negative environmental problems related to large scale agriculture, etc., have contributed to the shift of attention from global food systems to local ones. Moreover, the development of local food systems would promote the local economy. Therefore, without specific knowledge and in-depth understanding of the region and various factors involved with the spatial distribution of local food systems, we may not be able to get maximum benefit. The overall objective of this research is to identify the suitable locations for local food system in Illinois. To fulfill the objective, this research applied spatial analysis techniques e.g. autocorrelation, hotspot analysis, radial basis functions, and overlay methods. On the basis of several agroecological and socioeconomic factors, the study found that counties that are most suitable for the local food systems in Illinois are Cook, Will, Kane, McHenry, DuPage, Lake, Peoria, and Winnebago. The findings of this research will help federal and state level policy makers, local food professionals, researchers, and farmers to establish sustainable local food systems.

Academics and Extracurriculars: A National Study of College Radio

This study was designed to follow in the steps of a 1969 study of college radio management and structure, both to see how college radio in general has changed, and to update the models presented. A survey was issued through an email listserv affiliated with College Broadcasters Incorporated, and received 50 responses.

Some issues that college radio face have remain unchanged, such staff turnover, training, and college radio and it's relation to the broadcast industry. At the same time, older technologies such as carrier current have fallen by the wayside, while streaming radio has become the new low-cost entry choice. Interestingly, the model concepts put forth in 1969 still have quite a bit of relevance, though the boundaries between them are more fluid than one might expect.

This paper strives to understand how my own conceptions (reflexivity) and embodiment (engagement) of a particular rapper, Jay-Z, contributes towards my subjectivity and art. My research answers, “What does my own experience and embodiment of Jay-Z tell me about my own black masculinity and art in the hip-hop generation?” To answer this question, I use what Toyosaki calls “praxis-oriented autoethnography.” I show what my relationship with Jay-Z tells me about my black masculinity, culture, and becoming within the hip-hop generation.

Social Media and Primary Commercial Service Airports

Throughout the past decade the aviation industry in the United States has continually encountered significant socio-economic burdens. Most notable, the tragic events of September 11th left the industry highly susceptible to economic turmoil, such as the global recession accentuated by record high fuel prices, as well as sociological events like the world pandemic in the form of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The nation’s airports, the infrastructure supporting this industry, are no exception. In conjunction with these onerous events, continuing cuts in intergovernmental funding sources, as well as weakened revenue streams, have forced airports to utilize contemporary tools, strategies, and techniques to reinforce traditional management functions. Social media platforms such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Foursquare, are a growing trend throughout various public and private industries to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and overall yield in regard to marketing and communication strategies. Consistent with New Public Management and the reinvention of government in the 1980s, conducive of cost-efficiency and customer-centric approaches, airports utilize social media to increase self-sufficiency by reducing expenditures associated with traditional marketing and communication modes. In addition, social media technologies enable airports to more effectively target, engage, and foster two-way communication with a multitude of audiences.

This study provides an overview of these popular social media services. This study empirically examines, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the current usage of social media throughout Primary Commercial Service airports. Statistics on airport usage, best practices and case studies are provided, supporting preliminary guidance on the use of social media at airports.

This paper advocates for assignments that are “high risk” in order to promote a less than predictable classroom environment. This paper attempts to create a space specific to first-year teachers of Freshman Composition and specifically for first-year teachers of Freshman Composition. Sample assignments are couched inside of a personal narrative of failure, as first first-year teachers of Freshman Composition are encouraged to explore the relationship between risk and reward, between pedagogical approach and classroom practice.

During the last decade, the fast development of new technologies: the Internet, personal computer, portable electronic device, etc., have powerful influences on people’s life especially their consuming behavior. By making consumer’s lives easier, technologies also empower them through more choices on merchandise. Meanwhile, new technologies also drive enterprises, particular media companies, to operate with state-of-the-art techniques, physically as well as structurally. This research project studies the convergence of conventional media with new technologies by focusing on the managerial issues with convergence and business strategies that conventional media companies are using. In this project, it will concentrate on the newspaper and television sector of conventional media industry, there are two case studies: The New York Times and National Broadcasting Company (NBC). The research will not only review the strategies that theses two companies are using, but will also compare the similar and different strategic operational approaches between the newspaper and television industries.
